ROCK HISTORY ON OCTOBER 31ST.....through the years.................

Let's start with a trivia question......name the follow Tupelo Mississippian that Elvis helped get a recording contract for at SUN records.....tho, Sam Phillips didnt promote this new artist of his the way this singer wanted (Sam did that a few times....didnt he??) so he switched labels and in 1964 took this song (amid the "British invasion") took it nationally to an impressive #11....... anybody??

Pianist Johnnie Johnson hired 26 year old Chuck Berry as a guitarist in his band. While playing evening gigs in the St. Louis area, Berry kept his day job as a hairdresser for the next three years in 1952



The Quarry Men decided to change their name to Johnny and the Moondogs. The band were in Liverpool auditioning for the Carrol Levis show. The Quarry Men featured John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison in 1959.

ROCK & ROLL NEWS IN 2009

"Let It Bleed" by the Rolling Stones, "Led Zeppelin IV," "Ziggy Stardust" from David Bowie and Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" are among the ten classic album covers which will become stamps from Britain's Royal Mail January 7.



The Songwriters Hall of Fame announced its nominees for the Class of 2010 Saturday (October 17). In the writer/ performer category, they include Dion, David Gates, Tommy James, John Cougar Mellencamp, Lou Reed, Leon Russell, Cat Stevens and Earth, Wind & Fire. Among the writers nominated are Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, Jackie DeShannon and Joe South (who are somehow not considered performers), as well as Mark James ("Suspicious Minds"), Luther Dixon ("Soldier Boy") and the teams of Jerry Ragavoy and Bert Burns ("Twist & Shout") and Paul Vance and Neil Pockriss ("Itsy Bitsy Bikini"). Two performers and three non-performers will be chosen and announced early next year.



After two years of lobbying by the town of Wink, Texas, a monument was placed at the site of Roy Orbison's boyhood home there by the Texas Historical Commission this past week. The site is currently a vacant lot but the town hopes to place a surrogate home there for visitors.

Jim started both threads a few years back…since then, due to life getting in the way…we decided to share the topic we both enjoyed so much…
So everyone let’s make some noise!!!…. help us out with some input here!

I have a big day today with the Grandchildren and I am off to do some chores for my Mom. I will be back tomorrow, you have some interesting information here Jim.

But, before i leave LOL...see how hard it is for me to leave the forum??...LOL... Michelle Phillips married Dennis Hopper??? Never knew that!
Sounds like one of those party marriages!!..LOL…

Johnny and June first met in 1956, though they weren't married until 1968.

Good stuff, Marion and Jim...and like Patsy, Monster Mash has always been my fav Halloween song, followed by Witchy Woman. In fact, I have both of them on my Ipod so I don;t have to wait until Halloween to listen to them!
