Guys, I have checked through my emails and I think Tom was moving house this week. My emails to him have been coming back as undeliverable. Perhaps he has to set up a new internet account at his new house. Here's hoping he gets his computer set up real soon.

Hey guys, I'm fine! As you might have heard, Sheila and I have split. We sold the house and shared the profit--each going our own separate ways. I have an apartment just west of Dulles Town Center (Loudoun County, VA). Sheila had cut the Verizon internet service a day earlier than I expected, so I wasn't able to send out a last minute message to my friends. All is well, all is fine.

I might have one small problem: Verizon wasn't able to connect me with their high speed fios and to the internet at my new apartment. And so I'm back with AOL. I hope that doesn't cause a problem with my johnnycash.com profile. I want to keep my nickname: Busted!

All this reminds me how my parents would react when I wasn't home on time and didn't call.

When Lyn and I were out having dinner last week, we ate half the food in the southern hemisphere (well, Lyn did ... I, myself, was the very picture of self-control ) We went for a walk afterwards (to prevent Lyn from overflowing when she stooped to get in the car) and, as we passed a public phone, I automatically slipped my fingers into the coin return and produced 30c. Lyn asked, "Why did you do that?" "Force of habit," I replied. "For many years, phones and vending machines have funded my way of life!" It reminds me of many nights/mornings when I finally thought of my poor mother. The obvious thing to do in those far-off days before mobile phones (How did we survive???!!! ) was to find a public phone, fish for some change and set my mother's mind at rest that, at 2am, I was visiting a sick friend in hospital. My mother spent most of my teenage years under the impression that I was hanging with a bunch of critically ill people ... Now, if I had 30c for evey time I heard the poor lady/saint say, "The least you could have done was call, young man!!" I wouldn't have had to bother checking out all those coin returns!
