THIS DAY IN COUNTRY MUSIC
With a Halloween edition

Hi Folks hope you enjoy this little Halloween Treat! Wink

My favorite ……Dracula actor was Bela Lugosi IMO no one can compare to him….""No one actor ever exuded a greater aura of mystery than Bela Lugosi. With his tall stature, dark handsome features, piercing eyes and well-modulated Hungarian accent, the actor was very able to project the image of suave evilness. Unlike Lon Chaney, Sr., and Boris Karloff, who projected their genre roles mainly through the grotesque, Lugosi presented evil in well-mannered seductive ways, which certainly had an effect on the female portion of his audience. At one point in the mid-1930s Lugosi received as much fan mail from female admirers as did Clark Gable and this is doubly interesting since Lugosi worked mainly in horror films and at the time he was past 50 years of age. There can be no doubt that Bela Lugosi possessed more personal charisma than did his other counterparts, both before and since, in the horror film field, and while most of his genre outings were low-quality efforts, the actor himself is perhaps the most readily identifiable performer ever to make horror pictures."

Aug 16, 1956 -- Died of a heart attack. At his request, he was buried in his Dracula cape.
As Vincent Price related, when he and Peter Lorre went to view Bela's body, Lorre, seeing Lugosi dressed in his famous Dracula cape, quipped, "Do you think we should drive a stake through his heart just in case?"

Marion, enjoyed seeing June with Carl, Webb, and Marty. What a talented group. The Opry was certainly a fun place in the 50's. So many super stars that were probably taken for granted at that time. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Marion for that wonderful post. I have been away on a trip and out of touch for a few days ...so what a pleasure to come back to such a great wealth of country music history.

Church in the Wildwood is such a beautiful song, and ever so much more meaningful to me after seeing the original "Church in the Wildwood" at Hiltons two years ago.

A little personal story. I had a cd playing in my office the other day and a girl I work with who does not really care for country music came into the office while that song was playing. She got a sweet look on her face, and said "My mother used to sing that song all the time." I told her "that is Johnny Cash and the Carter Family singing it, but it was written and performed first by the Original Carter Family in the 1930's." She had no idea ...she had only heard her mother sing it to her many years ago, and it brought back fond memories.

What is my favorite Carter Family song? My first favorite is now and always will be "Wildwood Flower." My second and third favorite Carter Family songs change often ...depending on which cd I am listening to ...but one that is always up near the top is "Lover's Return," which was covered recently on one of the Trio albums by Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. Another is "Single Girl, Married Girl..." as true today as it was back then....and another is "Winding Stream," which Roseanne did so well on the Carter Family Tribute cd.

The clip from the Opry Stars of the 1950's is a priceless one. Seeing Goldie and June together knowing what happened during the same time these shows were being filmed is very interesting. Because of that, when I watch my dvd's of these shows, I am always looking for little "asides" and "looks" that betray what was going on behind the scenes.

"June was my solid rock. She was always there. She was my counselor, comforter, everything else. What a wonderful woman she was."....from the Final Interview with Kurt Loder in Bill Miller's book, Cash - An American Man.

Terry, this is SO off topic but do you remember when Princess Margaret of England brushed some lint off of Peter Townsend's shoulder and someone saw and the secret was out that she was in love with a DIVORCED man? Just thought of that out of the blue!!! Big Grin

Patsy, I do remember that ....a simple gesture, a certain look, a little dig ...all of these speak volumes. Some things never change!!!
