I like your list the way it is except I would substitute Lennon/McCartney for Gordon Lightfoot. And that's not to discredit Lightfoot; I think he's fabulous.
Honorable mention: Tom T. Hall, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Hank Williams Sr., Carole King, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Webb, Harlan Howard, Willie Nelson, Warren Zevon, John Mellencamp, and Neil Young. |

I couldnt limit myself to just five however I will. The names already mentioned are definitely on my list & my five (six actually) after JRC would have to be in no particular order: Kristofferson Lennon-McCartney Dylan Brian Wilson & John Prine |

I'm sure that A.P. may have done quite a bit of writing but much of his contribution to the world of music was as a "collector" of songs. I believe that I read somwhere once that he literally roamed the countryside, covering hundreds of miles learning old folk songs that had been handed down from generation to generation.
Regarding Harlan Howard, I read that he once had 15 of his songs in the Country Top 40 at the same time. Wow!!! I doubt that anybody will ever equal that accomplishment. |

Harlan once said the best time for writing a song is either when you're falling in love or just losing it. What a guy. How many times he's been divorced?

Reimer, I know it is at least 5!
Jerry ...I thought about AP and the Carters, and you know what a fan I am of their music, but JD is right...much of A.P.'s contribution was as a "songcatcher" ---traveling far and wide learning old and new folk songs, and re-writing them and preserving the old stories and melodies for future generations. A.P. did, of course, write some songs himself, as did Maybelle and Sara....but I consider all the Carters in a class by themselves when it comes to music. "June was my solid rock. She was always there. She was my counselor, comforter, everything else. What a wonderful woman she was."....from the Final Interview with Kurt Loder in Bill Miller's book, Cash - An American Man. |
