Chief, she also rode a motorcycle when that was unheard of for a woman, and when she was taking June and Helen to horseback riding lessons, she surprised them one day by jumping bareback on a nearby horse and taking off across the field, leaving them with their mouths open. They had no idea she could even ride a horse with a saddle, let alone bareback. You are right, she was a strong, beautiful, and talented woman ....a true original.

She definitely was one of a kind and one worth knowing.

I would have LOVED to hear some of her wisdom! Johnny Cash loved his "Mother Maybelle". She certainly was an anchor in his life.

Skipbo, if you want to hear more about her, I highly recommend two books --- 1) Among My Klediments by June Carter Cash, and 2) Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone, by Mark Zwonitzer. Both contain a lot of information about Maybelle, her life, her music, and her family.

Hana, great topic. Johnny had lots of influences, and the Carters were certainly one of them.

1. He listened to the Carter Family on the radio when he was a young boy in Dyess, Arkansas. They were some of the first songs he learned, the songs of the Carters. The Original Carter Family, Maybelle, Sara and A.P., and their children, Helen, June, Anita, and Janette, sang with them. When Johnny went on his high school senior trip to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, he saw Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters perform, and he not only loved their music, but he loved watching June sing and do her comedy routine as well.

2. When he made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry as a performer, he met June Carter backstage, and told her someday he would marry her.

3. After he had been touring for a while, he decided he needed a girl singer to complete his stage show, and June became a regular part of the show, and after a short while, her mother and sisters also joined the show.

4. The Carter Family, June, and her parents, Maybelle and Ezra, took an interest in Johnny's well being and dedicated a good portion of their time and efforts to help him kick his substance abuse problems. June's father was a Bible scholar, and got Johnny very interested in studying the Bible. Johnny dedicated his first autobiography to Ezra (Pop) Carter.

5. June and Johnny got married, and became the most beloved couple in country music. They had a son, John Carter. They traveled the world taking their music to all corners of the earth.

6. Mother Maybelle and Johnny had a very close connection. He called her his "fishing buddy," and they shared a very strong bond.

7. Johnny, along with June, made a concerted effort to keep the music of the country music pioneers, The Carter Family, alive by singing and recording many of the old Carter Family songs.

Hope this quick synopsis helps.

So true, Chief....Nashville did not appreciate their treasure, Mother Maybelle, living right in their midst. The folk artists of the day, such as Joan Baez and Mike Seeger, were more appreciative of the history and tradition of Maybelle and her music.
