I agree with June, totally awesome Jim!
Great find Johnny and June first met in 1956, though they weren't married until 1968. "The story goes that my father walked up to her, and that the reason he came (to the Grand Ole Opry that night) was he wanted to meet her. And he said, 'I'm going to marry you one day' here between these walls, and she said, 'Sure.' They were both married (to other people) at the time. That's pretty unusual." I have this on one of my Carter Family Bear cd's and it always gives me a smile. But even better is the story Johnny told about the story behind this recording. Obviously it was scripted, pretty primitively, by Mr. Peer. Not only did they do this recording, but also another where "The Carter Family Visits Jimmie In Texas." These were recorded in Louisville about 1933, and Jimmie came there, and the Carters traveled there. Maybelle at that time was living near Richmond and traveled alone on the train to meet up with Jimmie and AP and Sara in Louisville to do the session. Eck was working back in VA. As Johnny relates the story in "Cash, The Autobiography," he tried to get Maybelle to tell him more about working with Jimmie Rodgers. In her humble and quiet way, she would not say much, but more by what she did not say than what she did, Johnny got the feeling that Jimmie had probably made a pass at the very proper Mother Maybelle on the occasion of their working together. She did acknowledge that Jimmie was rather sick at that time, and "probably not himself." That was all she would say about it...but Johnny drew his own conclusions.
