I think that the least discussed thing about June is education. She is bilingual. She went to some fine schools for artist.Much more to her than meets the eye.

That was one of the points I wanted to make.Hillbillys are pigeonholed as shallow in movies ect.Take a look at Junes life and the stereo types go out the door.

June was class all the way!! Applying country wisdom to life does not make you backward. She had a profound thirst for knowledge, as did her John, and they never stopped learning.

No doubt about June's innate intelligence and although she was mostly self-taught, she never stopped learning. In her book "Among My Klediments," she spoke of her great desire to go to college, but because she was so important to her family's 'business,' she gave up that dream to travel the country with Mother Maybelle and Helen and Anita. She states she never regretted that decision, because it was the right one to make at the time, but because of her lack of a college education, she continued to learn and study all her life.

She was able to speak French as well as English, and did speak with a delightful southern accent. Of course she often used her "hillbilly English," as part of her stage act, but she was a very well spoken lady.

As mentioned, she did earn a degree in Theology, as did Johnny, as well as an honorary college degree. She received many well deserved honors over the years....but she makes it clear she really enjoyed her role as wife and mother the most.

June....I still miss not only Johnny, but you too!

After her marriage to Carl broke up, she wanted to go in some different directions. She took Carlene and moved to NY. She had been encouraged to join the Neighborhood Playhouse, and there she studied with the likes of James Dean, Robert Duvall, Tom Poston, etc. She appeared in some stage plays and TV shows. She tells about her experiences in the song "I Used To Be Somebody." There is more detail in her book "Among My Klediments."

Cheryl, June gives a glimpse of her life in NYC in her song "I Used To Be Somebody," when she speaks of teaching James Dean the words to Wildwood Flower as they walked through the streets of NYC. She also speaks of a flower he gave her. When pressed for more details, she was coy and said it would be left at that. She similarly spoke a little about her relationship with Elvis, except to speculate on the value of the letters he wrote to her -- the ones Johnny jealously threw into Old Hickory Lake.

In one of the books I read, it written that June had such a personality that most every man she met fell a little bit in love with her...and I do not doubt that statement.
