I was able to listen to this song from OUR MAN's Personal Songs yesterday and I knew I had heard it but was able to sing every word along with OUR MAN the very first time I played it.. I never heard OUR MAN sing it but someone did and I had heard it MANY, MANY times when I was young.. Does anyone know who made it popular? It was many years ago that I listened to it over and over...
(You know, I guess I was a strange child!! I have ALWAYS loved country music. When my friends were loving Elvis and bee bop, I was loving country.. Yeah, it's a great song - scarry stuff! A modern-day murder ballad, pretty much in the same dark folksy vein as George Jones' "Open Pit Mine", which Johnny reportedly also covered in Rick Rubin's livingroom in 1993 - unfortunately this one hasn't been unearthed yet...

I agree with Stig about the Bobby Bare version probably being the most popular.
Here it is. http://star.walagata.com/w/kenmacksey/HTML/bb_millers_cave.html ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Now I know it isn't easy to speak up and to emulate Johnnys life Especially in this world today, so full of poverty, war and strife But we all need to help carry off some of the darkness on our back Cause it can't all be left to just one man in black. Thanks for posting that, Ken. I don't think I have ever heard the song before.

A young man named Tommy Tucker(no connection to british star)from Memphis was the first to record MILLER'S CAVE on the Hi record label in 1960 at the ripe old age of 19 or 20. I have discussed this artist with Jack Clement and he stated that Tommy was long on talent and short on work ethic. A DWI/FATAL ACCIDENT after Tommy got a recording contract with RCA cut short his career and after a brief time in prison, he floundered around for several years. He died while still in his 40's in 1986. Another potential star cut down. His recording of MILLER'S CAVE may be the best of all of them.
I have most of his songs and he was very good. LarryBaird |

I'd love to hear Tommy Tucker's version, Larry. Do you think it could be possible to post it here?
Cheers, Stig |
