This has been the inspiration for a number of threads here in the forum, most recently from Mike, I believe. But I can never get too much of a good thing. Almost all of us have probably already seen this before, but for those who have not, this performance was taken from a 1999 televised Johnny Cash tribute concert:

I love what he says before the song, and I actually prefer his performance of the song over Johnny's own recordings of it. But Johnny's not too shabby himself. Wink

I enjoyed that performance very much and his rendition of the song. Very moving, and obviously, he wanted to be there for the '99 tribute, but couldn't. In my music circle, I've tried doing this song like Bruce did, and it was very well received. Thanks for posting this, J.D.

I still like OUR MAN's rendition best but being on www.johnnycash.com, et al has introduced me to new music and new musicians. And that is a good thing.... Thanks for that contribution...

Folks,
I was in the audience that night in NY. Unfortunately Bruce had taped his version the week before. The performance gave me chills. Just as important was a simple "Thank You, Johnny. " from Bruce at the end and the comments before. They captured the moment....second only to when John and June's performance.

A year or so later we were in Memphis for the big CashBash shindig. Each of us got to select songs to perform. This was my choice. With Lisa Horngren following me on bass, I performed it as Bruce had....and again felt the chills as folks quitred down and listened intently. Later that night WS walked up to me and asked where did I learn to do that version. I reminded him of the nY Show. He said that to me how much he enjoyed it....That he found it special....and it meant the world.

The Boss and The Man......cut out of the same cloth......and black cloth at that!

That's really cool stuff, Mike. Thanks for sharing that. I think it's interesting that you and Luke play the song in the Springsteen style. I was never a good enough picker to get it figured out completely. I think he's using a "C" chord shape in the second fret, so it would, in essence, be some kind of a "D". That's as far as I got. Bruce Springsteen I am not, but I sure do appreciate the haunting style in which he performed this song. Thank you all for the cool comments.

While I love Johnny's songs by Johnny, I am gaining an even deeper appreciation for the impact his music has had on so many great artists as I listen to tributes like this one by Bruce.

Great version....great song by a master songwriter. I saw Marty Stuart in concert a few years back, and he announced "I will do my tribute to Johnny by doing my favorite Johnny Cash song..." and he sang "Give My Love To Rose." Great tribute from yet another really talented guy to the master, Johnny Cash!
