Hi everybody,

I listened to this fantastic song again recently after reading a small comment about it. The comment said it was about lost love while I always thought it was a metaphoric song about alcoholism – probably just because of my lousy English. I'd love to hear your opinion!

I tend to agree with you. I think it is about addiction. Alcohol, drugs, etc... Powerful song though... I am bad about not paying attention to lyrics sometimes.. I listen to the "song" rather than the hidden meanings.. Glad you pointed that out to me...

I do agree that this song could be about alcoholism (trembling because the person is going through withdrawl for instance), but then why did Cash pick this song for the album "love"?

It's one of mine & her favorites!

Why on "Love"?
1) Who knows, who picked the songs.
2) Alcoholism and a love affair can be quite similar: the highs and lows, the silly behaviour, feeling on top of the world, wanting to die, longing for more etc.
Just thoughts ...

Interesting comments on one of my favorite songs off the "Love" cd. It is a song not very often mentioned by Cash fans, but it is one of my favorites. Is it about addiction, alcholism or love? I am a lyrics person, and I never thought it was about anything other than love. I do not have the cd at home tonight because it is on my cd changer at work (it played twice today), but I will listen more closely tomorrow and see if I see the addiction connection....wait....I have it on my Ipod, and I just listened to it again, assessing it in the light of addiction...and I think that is the meaning....but I like it better when I think of it as a love song.

I always thought it is a song about a man who loves a woman which is addicted to alcohol - I think it is the Cash-story from the other side...

One of my favorites. I'd love to hear more people's thoughts on it.

This world that I live in
is empty and cold
This loneliness cuts me
and tears up my soul
I'm no child of destiny
no fortune son
I've chased you so long now
I'm too weak to run

So here I return
to a backstreet of thrills
back to any warm shoulder
till she's got her fill
and then I treat shame
like an old friend from home
that I can lean on
till the misery is gone

A new day is here
yet nothing is new
You're still gone
and i tremble for you

I cry out at bedtime
though please not tonight
But again there's your footsteps
and i turn on the light,
of course, you're not there
though you never are
Then i try to forget
that there's always a bar

And will i win that battle
Yes, sometimes i do
But sleep doesn't come
When I tremble for you

Thanks for the lyrics.
You know, some people LOVE ALCOHOL Big Grin
That's as simple a connection as any other, I guess... Cool

But there sometimes comes a time when the love becomes something else, though, Reimer.. It is no longer a loving relationship.. Just pain.. Frowner

Thank you Patsy, yes, it's true what you say.
