Right off the top of my head, I cant immediatly think of any documentaries on what you are looking for.....tho.....if you go over to You- Tube and type in Johnny Cash at Manhattan Center you will get a fine selection of old "tried and true" and songs from JRC's fist CD with Rick Rubin.....check it out.....you'll like it & sorry I couldnt be more help. About three dozens of video recordings exist of live performances or TV appearances from 1994 to 1997. Many are rather bad amateur recordings, but some are really great professional footage. Some cover only a couple of songs, others the whole show. The best known ones are SXSW Festival at the EMO's in Austin (TX); Midtfyns Festival, Ringe (Denmark); Glastonbury Festival (UK); Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland); Manhattan Center, New York (all 1994) and the VH1 Storytellers broadcast (with Willie Nelson) from 1997. Most of these can be found on Youtube, at least in excerpts. Glastonbury, Montreux and Storytellers were released officially.

Interesting footage...black and white professionally shot with multiple cameras...even final production efforts i.e. Johnny leaving in his limo ect. The styling very reminiscent of the South by Southwest footage from the same year. I noticed many of the songs have been removed by U tube being in violation of the terms of use...In other words 'we don't want you to see this because we may in 10 years release it that is if it suits our fancy'. |

Last year I asked Lou Robin if they would ever release the "Hurt" video to be downloaded on Itunes. He said he did not know ...but it would be so great to have that performance available for an Ipod, as well as the Viper Room Concert available on dvd.
"June was my solid rock. She was always there. She was my counselor, comforter, everything else. What a wonderful woman she was."....from the Final Interview with Kurt Loder in Bill Miller's book, Cash - An American Man. |

Terry, I have the "Hurt" DVD. I bought a copy of "American IV: The Man Comes Around" when it was released but a few years later, I came across a version with a second disc (the "Hurt" DVD) included. Of course, I bought it immediately and gave my older copy of the album to a friend who I thought might appreciate it.
As for releasing any audio or video of the famous Viper Room performance, BRING IT ON!! My credit card is at the ready!! I can't believe that such material does not exist and am not particularly bothered by the sound quality. I know we have a tiny taste with "Tennessee Stud" and "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" but my tastes in Cash are simple ... I want it all!!! Your mate in The Land Down Under, Grahame.
